Alternative Medicine vs Conventional Medicine

Why opt for Alternative Medicine?

‘Alternative’ medicine is the natural treatment of disease that has been in effect long before conventional medicine was ever introduced. Many such practices offer great results; and include herbal remedies, ayurveda ,homeopathy, osteopathy, chiropractic, aromatherapy, naturopathy, and many other natural
therapies that have been proved to support the natural healing
function of the body .
Although there are different alternative therapies with
varying beliefs and techniques, there are common principles
under which they are all operating:
1. The body can heal itself naturally.
2. Health problems can be contributed to factors of mind,
body and emotions.
3. It is more important to get to the root cause of an
illness and treat the whole person than to concentrate upon
symptoms only.

The main difference between so-called alternative medicine
and conventional medicine is that the latter treats the symptoms of disease instead of treating the whole person
and the cause of disease. On the other hand, alternative
medicine puts much emphasis upon the prevention of disease
(as mentioned above), and seeks to treat the whole person so
as to strengthen the immune system .

Maharashtra govt funds homeopathic research on A (H1N1

Concerned over the spread of Swine flu cases in the state, Maharashtra government has decided to boost homeopathic research on the H1N1 virus with an initial provision of Rs five lakh.

Announcing the fund for Dhondumama Sathe Homeopathy college here at a workshop on 'Swine flu and homeopathy', state health minister Dr Shobha Bachhav, who reviewed the anti-Swine flu measures over the weekend, said the research project would be first of its kind to find an effective alternative medical treatment for the infection which has become a global pandemic.

A senior city homeopath Dr Sreerang Oak had on Friday advocated a preventive treatment combining two bio-chemic substances of homeopathy -- 'Kali Mur' and 'Ferrum Phos' (with power of 12 X )-- which he said could arrest the spread of the H1N1 virus among population.

Four tablets each of the two medicines, easily and cheaply available with chemists could stop the infection in the first stage, bestowing an immunity on the person against the virus, he claimed.

Pune has registered over 90 positive cases of Swine flu, mostly school children, during the last three weeks which account for the largest share of the over 110 reported from various parts of Maharashtra.

Homeopathy Treatments For Headaches

If you have been suffering from chronic headaches and the medicine your doctor prescribes does not do much to help, you could consult a homeopath to find out more about homeopathy treatments for headaches.

There are different kinds of headaches and each comes with its own set of symptoms. A tension headache does not feel the same as a migraine or the type of head pain that is caused by fatigue. Sometimes headaches can be a symptom of a bigger illness. Homeopathy treatments for headaches obviously vary according to the symptoms.

You may have to try more than one of the homeopathy treatments for headaches before you find one that actually works. You must be calm and patient when going for the right medication. However, if you have chronic headaches that are having a serious negative impact on your quality of life it is best to consult with a homeopath rather than trying to diagnose and treat yourself. By consulting with an expert you should see quicker results since they will easily be able to find the right remedy for your problem.

Homeopathy can also be used in conjunction with conventional medicine. If the conventional prescription has not been effective then homeopathy treatment can be used instead of ordinary medication. Homeopathy has helped many people to recover from various health conditions, but it is necessary to be patient.

Traditional treatments gaining ground

Traditional treatments gaining ground in India............

With the rise in the health problems under the category of lifestyle diseases, the alternate systems of medicines like ayurveda, homeopathy have witnessed impressive growth over the years with time-tested methodologies and marketing techniques.

India's expertise in traditional treatments such as homeopathy, naturopathy, ayurveda and unani are becoming increasingly popular as these have no side effects, according to industry chambers.

However, he adds, there is no alternative to allopathy as far as the emergency and cardiac medicines are concerned.

According to the World Health Organisation, more than one billion people use herbal medicines and in India more than 65 per cent people living in the rural areas use Ayurveda and medical plants to meet their primary health care needs.

India has over 75 lakh qualified doctors, who according to Assocham, charge 'reasonable professional fees'.

There are over 400,000 registered homeopaths in the country currently, with approximately 13,000 more being added every year. Source: http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/099200906301422.htm

Homeopathy in Pregnancy

For the gentle approach and the safety of the baby, expectant mothers seek out non-toxic treatments for everyday ailments during pregnancy. Homeopathy offers a side effect free medicine for pregnant women, breast-feeding mothers and newborns. Homeopathic remedies do not adversely interact with other medicines nor do they inhibit their action. So using homeopathic remedies before, during and after pregnancy can prove invaluable.

Homeopaths are able to help ailments arising around reproduction, pre conception health, fertility, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding and post-natal depression. Your homeopath will be able to supply you with a homeopathic remedy kit to use for acute prescribing.

Pre conception care
Healthy parents make healthy babies. Homeopathy can play a part in getting you both ready to conceive. The much discussed ‘constitutional homeopathic remedy’ is one that matches your energetic state as completely as possible. It takes into account the pattern of your symptoms combined with your personal characteristics that will point to a particular remedy. This remedy will stimulate your own self-healing to respond and work effectively on improving your health. You may have been feeling a bit run down, having recurrent colds or other acute illnesses. Within a couple of months of receiving homeopathic treatment you should begin to see an improvement in your general health. This is also an excellent time to deal with any chronic conditions or health concerns that may cause difficulty during pregnancy. These might include skin complaints or respiratory troubles, addiction to junk foods, caffeine or cigarettes for example.

Fertility
It’s a well kept secret that homeopathy improves fertility. Homeopaths treat couples with fertility issues to enhance their chances of conception. Second time parents may be as anxious to conceive, as those waiting for their first baby. Remedies can be prescribed to establish regular menstrual cycles, alleviate menstrual problems and to stimulate ovulation or sperm production. There is anecdotal evidence that homeopathic treatment before IVF and other assisted conception methods raises the chance of success. This holistic approach to fertility means that the emotional, psychological and physical symptoms can be gently dealt with to help couples through this exciting but often stressful process.

Pregnancy
Having babies can be easy for some women who sail through pregnancy looking and feeling fabulous. They are the lucky ones; for others being pregnant can bring morning sickness, constipation, back pain, heartburn and tiredness.

Swiss take an holistic approach

SWITZERLAND BECAME the first country in Europe to enshrine complementary medicine into its constitution when more than 67 per cent of national voters opted in favour of a new constitutional article on complementary medicine last week.

That result, which followed a public campaign, will now make it more likely that certain complementary therapies will be re-instated into the basic health insurance scheme available to all Swiss citizens.

In Switzerland, a new constitutional article can be proposed to the Swiss parliament if it is supported by 100,000 signatures gathered within 18 months.

In this case, the parliament rejected the initial proposal on complementary medicine and put forward its own counterproposal on complementary medicine which was then put to a vote.

A majority of citizens in all cantons voted in favour of adopting this new constitutional article. Historically, counter-proposals have been three times more likely to be voted in by the public than original popular proposals.

One of the aspirations of the pro-complementary therapy lobby group is that professorships of complementary medicine will now be created in Swiss universities.

Treating Childhood Fevers Naturally

Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy was driven to despair when his children were sick. “When then was certain help to be obtained?” was the yearning cry of the comfortless father in the midst of the groaning of his children, dear to him above all else. “Night and desolation around me—no sight of enlightenment for my troubled paternal heart.” The yearning cry of his fevered children led him to discover the laws of homeopathic cure: like cures like. Homeopathy has numerous remedies to treat a variety of fever symptoms.

Homeopathy is a very specific form of healing which refers to the usage of
homeopathic remedies which are made in a very scientific and precise way.
It was discovered by a German medical doctor about 200 years ago.

Although it is natural, homeopathy is not herbal medicine per se.Homeopathic remedies are made from either
plant, animal or mineral substances, and there are literally thousands of
homeopathic remedies. Almost all natural substances in the universe can
potentially be made homeopathically, if they aren’t already!

Awareness meet on alternative medicine held in Ludhiana

From ANI

Ludhiana, April 23 : With a rising concern for health across the world, a lot of people in Punjab are increasingly getting drawn to alternate systems of medicine to escape the side effects of modern-day drugs.

A two-day awareness meet was held here recently to educate people on the traditional systems of medicine in India. 'Arogya' - meaning 'holistic health' was the ninth such event organised in the country aimed at promoting healthy living in modern-day society.

Organized by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, manufacturers of Indian medicines, practitioners, and people from different walks of life participated in the event.

"This is a choice, which we wanted to make available to the people who are earlier availing mostly the allopathic medicine. Now they have choice of Ayurvedic and homeopathic systems of medicine. There is lot of scope for this system of medicine. About 12-13 years back, a department of Ayurveda was set up in Government of India as independent department and in the state also we have well-qualified doctors of Ayurveda and Homeopathy. We are also promoting homeopathy and Ayurvedic system of medicine with allopathic system of medicine in health institution in the state," said Rakesh Sharma, Special Secretary for Health in Punjab.

At the fair, 70 manufacturers of Ayurvedic, Siddha, Unani and Homeopathy medicines showcased their products besides interacting with medical practitioners and consumers.he fair highlights the fact that there are diseases that have a more effective treatment option in the Indian systems of medicine.

Moreover, people made a beeline for the free Ayurvedic and Homeopathic OPDs to get check-ups done and avail of the free medicines that were being given out with prescriptions. nother aim of the fair was to provide information to the young generation about the advantages of the traditional systems of Indian medicine.

"The young generation is not very much aware of Ayurveda and to get quick relief from the disease, they adopt the system of allopathic medicine but if they try to understand about Ayurveda, they will know that it has very good results instead of Allopathic treatment," said Rajni, a trainee doctor.

With increasing faith of people in Indian medicines, a number of super-specialty clinics are now thriving in Punjab.

Dr. Batra's Homeopathy Clinic, Arogya Clinic and Ashirwad Ayurvedic Health and Panchkarma Centre - just to name a few - are providing complete treatment of ailments. By Karan Kapoor

Let’s get to the bottom of hepatitis C

The common people in our country believed that unhygienic conditions lead to the development and spread of hepatitis C. The reality is far from it. No doubt unhygienic conditions lead to many a disease or infection but not hepatitis C. The cases of this disease are on the increase in the hygiene-conscious developed countries.

While only patients often show a keen interest in the knowledge of treatment, everybody ought to know about the causes of the disease to take preventive measures in time. The discovery of the hepatitis C virus in 1989 was considered a major breakthrough. Then a race began among all pharmaceutical companies to beat one another out in finding a vaccine or a lasting cure for this disease. This race continues till todate.

Recently a team of medical researchers, while trying to get to the bottom of the rapid spread of the hepatitis C all over the world, came across a strange discovery. They found striking similarity between the symptoms experienced by the hepatitis C patients and the side-effects of the antibiotics. They dug out a strong link between the extensive usage of antibiotics and the spread of hepatitis C disease. They also observed that patients with a history of constant use of antibiotics for a long time are more prone to develop the chronic form of the disease.

Antibiotics are drugs used to treat infections caused mainly by bacteria. Even when properly administered, antibiotics weaken the immune system by altering the body’s natural bacterial balance.

The first antibiotics were prescribed in the late 1930s. They were hailed as the magic bullet that would put an end to the threat of infectious diseases. In 1969 the US Surgeon General said, “The war against infectious diseases has been won.” This impression was, however, proved erroneous as in the last few decades we faced an alarming increase in cases of bacterial infections that do not respond to antibiotics. This is because bacteria acquire resistance to antibiotics, so there is a continuous search for new and effective antibacterial agents.

The hepatitis C virus is spread by contact with an infected person’s blood. But not all who get the infected blood develop the chronic hepatitis. Most of the young, healthy and strong persons successfully resist against the virus. This means that weak defence mechanism along with other factors contributes to the development of the chronic form of this disease.

In homeopathy great emphasis is laid on strengthening the immune system of the body. People are now gradually becoming aware of the dangerous side-effects of the antibiotics. The number of patients using homeopathic medicines to strengthen their own immune defences is increasing day by day. Only those who have a strong defence mechanism are, by the grace of Allah, safe from hepatitis C in the real sense.
